Transformation: Myles Style

Written by Joshua Carter on November 15th, 2008

This past week my family and I were fortunate enough to be chosen as part of the home makeover show, "Myles of Style".  The show’s host and main designer is Kim Myles.  She is accompanied by master contractor Anthony Gilardi and a small army of designers and contractors – not to mention a full film crew.

On the show, the Myles crew picks homeowners who have a sufficiently sucky room in the house that needs a serious transformation.  I can safely say that our master bedroom fit the bill perfectly, and Kim and crew agreed. Yeah, it was that bad.

When they got here I had not idea what to expect.  But let me tell you it was an amazing experience.  The Myles crew was fun, insanely polite, energetic, inspiring and great with our kids. Plus they cleaned up after themselves every night- nice.

Apparently, because it hasn’t aired yet I can’t tell you how awesome the room turned out.  I cannot talk about how much we love it.  I can’t even hint at how much fun we had filming the process.  Or how much my kids loved having their moment on camera.  Or how much this room transformation means to me and my wife.

Unfortunately, I can’t tell you any of that. So you will not hear a word regarding any of that from me.

I can tell you that I am looking forward to sleeping in my bed tonight,  I do not think that is a national secret.

This whole process got me thinking about how I fell into a trap that I see all too often with clients- putting myself (in this case ourselves) last.

When we moved into our house a few years back we fully decorated the kids rooms (their rooms rock I must say), the office, the living room and dining room and kitchen.  They all had decent style and flare.

The only room we did nothing with was our master bedroom.  It was always the  "we’ll get to that later" room.  It stayed the same boring beige it has always been. It was a sad and frightful graveyard of furniture our from past domiciles.  It had ugly pine dressers decorated with magic markers and a chair that looked more like a cat’s scratching post.

The room was unwelcoming and not a place I would look forward to going. We had taken care of everyone else’s room but not our own. (Now it is a different story- or is it? I can’t say.)

I know very (very very) little of design, but I am fully familiar with the concept of transformation.  I see clients all the time who, for whatever reason, have put themselves last on the list of life.  And often by the time they see me their health, fitness and appearance have been placed on the back burner.

What they fail to see (and what I failed to see in this instance as well) is that when you place yourself last – there is less of you to give. You have to refill your tank physically, emotionally and even spiritually.  The more you can tend to your own well being the more time and energy you can give to the other important aspects of your life like work, spouses and kids.

Far too many just don’t see it.  They let outside forces control their life, and the end result is never good. And in this instance I too am guilty.

I did not realize how much my wife and I needed a place to call our own.  A sanctuary with a flat screen (and a bed). It has only been one day and my life has been upgraded.

Why did I wait so long?  I have no idea.

Why do so many wait so long to spend some time on the most important person in the world? (for those not following along, that would be *you*) There is no single answer – (but I’m sure there are a crap pile of excuses.)

I must give thanks to Kim & Anthony as well as the whole outstanding Myles crew.  They did not only transform my room,  they have given my life a much needed upgrade.

My advice to you: Don’t wait for a TV show to show up at your door to make a change in your life.  Take charge and do it.
