Winning & Losing (by a nose)

Written by Joshua Carter on September 15th, 2008

We have a running joke in my family.  The sad part is the joke is smack dab in the middle of my face: Yes, it’s my nose.

It is not Karl Malden large or anything, but it is bigger than I would like.  It started out normal but then puberty hit.

It helps him sniff out criminals

My brother Joe suffers from the same affliction (being related to my mother that is) so at least we can laugh (or cry) together.

Several years back, after decades of teasing back and forth, Joe, my Mom and I decided to see whose nose was in fact the biggest.  Truth be told I do not remember how we actually measured. Volume? That can’t be right. For the life of me I just can’t recall. Whatever, somehow we measured.

And the result – My nose was the biggest so I won.

Here’s my point: sometimes even when you win, you lose.

That was a really long way for me to get to something I see from time to time that really bugs me:  People who spend so much time on fitness (or other endeavors) that they end up sacrificing more important things- like time with big nosed relatives.

So you might think you are winning – but really you are losing.

Strive for balance in your life, and remember what it is you are fighting for in the first place. Prioritize and make time for the truly important things in life whatever they may be- but always remember that you are one of them.
